Taxis in Ulaanbaatar Taxis cost 1,000 Tugrik per kilometer and are a relatively safe way to get around the city. Keep in mind that virtually any car can be a taxi—simply raise your hand and a vehicle will stop for you. Unofficial taxis have no meters and can be more expensive, though this isn't always the case. Generally speaking, it's best to avoid unofficial taxis waiting for customers at the airport or train station in Ulaanbaatar, or at night outside bars and nightclubs. It's preferable to walk a little distance and flag down a taxi on the street. Avoid getting into a taxi if there are already two men inside.

Getting Around the Country Independently For travel from Ulaanbaatar to other provincial cities, buses and private cars depart from the Dragon Center or Naran Tuul market. Buses operate on fixed schedules, and it's advisable to buy your ticket the day before departure. Private vehicles leave once they're full. Generally, you'll need to arrive early at Naran Tuul to reserve your seat, then wait—sometimes for several hours—until the driver departs. The highway network is centralized around Ulaanbaatar, and while you can reach any major city in the country by bus from the capital, moving between provincial cities afterward becomes quite difficult, and you'll need to rent a car with a driver. Remember that the true appeal of Mongolia lies in its countryside, which is accessible only by private jeep, or on foot and horseback. The rail network is very limited, but 17 domestic airports connect to Ulaanbaatar, and the most interesting cities have several flights per week to and from the capital—some, like Dalanzadgad and Moron, have daily flights.

Getting Around the Country with Horseback

Travel across the steppe is done on often challenging trails. Even though some itineraries are easier in terms of transportation, if you truly want to explore the landscape, you'll need to experience the Mongolian track.

For groups of two to three participants, we use mid-range 4x4 jeeps as vehicles (Mitsubishi Delica, Nissan Pajero). These jeeps are standard vehicles that offer good comfort and air conditioning.

For groups of three to five or six participants, we prefer the Russian 4x4 minivan, the UAZ. This vehicle's rustic appearance sometimes intimidates clients, but as a go-anywhere workhorse, it remains a reliable choice on the Mongolian track. Moreover, due to its mechanical simplicity, the driver can repair it with ease. Another advantage of the UAZ is its capacity: eight seats and a large trunk for storing trip logistics, food supplies, and your luggage. Generally, clients are satisfied with this vehicle, but if you're concerned about comfort, you can opt for Japanese jeeps on private trips.

Please note: With four or five participants, you may prefer two Japanese jeeps instead of a single UAZ, though this has a significant impact on pricing.

We also offer high-end 4x4 vehicle rentals as an option: Land Cruiser, Lexus, or Hummer.

Please note: For those with back pain, wearing a back support belt is highly recommended, regardless of which vehicle you choose.

For certain long journeys, you may use domestic flights with Hunnu Air or Aeromongolia. Domestic flights save considerable time and allow you to focus on what matters most: discovering the Mongolian people and enjoying nature on foot or horseback.
